Pre-Summer Break Final Reminders & Info
Thank you again to all of our students, parents, and boosters who came out Monday night to our orientation meeting.  Rookie Camp has been a major success and we are VERY impressed with all of our new members!  This is going to be another great year for “The PRIDE”.  Please take a moment to read the following information and reminders listed below.  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the band office.

Important Reminders
  1. FORMS:  ALL registration forms are now due!  These forms were in your membership packet at orientation and include the registration, medical release, uniform code & handbook acknowledgement forms.  If you did not receive a packet, it is available online at: http://www.shs-band.com/forms--handbook.html.  We also have a few extra copies in the band office.
  2. HANDBOOK CORRECTED DATES:  There were three incorrect dates published in our handbook.  Our post-camp rehearsals will be held Monday, July 31 & Tuesday/Thursday August 1st & 3rd.  Please see our corrected handbook online at: http://www.shs-band.com/forms--handbook.html
  3. BAND CAMP WEBSITE:  Our band camp website is now online!  Please visit the site to read up on all the information you need as members and parents before camp starts on July 17th.  http://www.southsidebandcamp.com
  4. SHIRT ORDERS: ALL shirt orders and money are due Thursday, May 25th.  Remember that all members are required to purchase at least 1 red & 1 black shirt.  Veteran members who already have the red “PRIDE” shirt DO NOT have to purchase another shirt, as these do not change from year to year.
    1. Credit in Charms / Shirt Payments: Parents, please understand that credit from fundraising or extra band fees cannot be used to purchase re-sale items such as t-shirts.  This is not our rule, but we do have to obey it.  If you were told different at the Monday night meeting please be understanding.  We apologize for any inconvenience.  Credit in Charms can and will be deducted towards the cost of membership fees.
  5. TEXT MESSAGES THROUGH REMIND: Please note that the 2016 marching band text group will be closed permanently on Friday, May 26th.  If you have not already done so, please text the message “@thepride17” to 81010 to sign up for the 2017 text group.
  6. CUBBIES & METHOD BOOKS:  All current high school students MUST have their cubbies cleaned out by Thursday, May 25th.  Also, all method books are due back to the band office.  Books not returned will be charged to the student’s school account.  Replacement books are $10 each.  Any items left in the band room over the summer will be donated to GoodWill, so don’t forget to grab your stuff!
  7. HAVE A GREAT SUMMER EVERYONE!

Hello, Parents & Students!

This is just a friendly reminder that we start our 8th Grade Band "Move Up" activities next week!  We are SUPER excited to see everyone!  Specifically, we wanted to remind everyone that Monday night at 6 pm, we will hold our mandatory orientation meeting in the high school auditorium.

We will also be collecting t-shirt orders and money for next year's band.  This should allow everyone to get their shirts a bit quicker this year.  ALSO, we are excited to offer a nicer band polo shirt option this year for students & parents.  Order forms for these shirts are attached to this email.

If you would like to order, please print this form & bring it with money to the orientation meeting.  Extra forms will also be available at the meeting.

See everyone Monday!
Go PRIDE GO!

The end of the year is approaching fast!  Please take a minute to review the information below.

  1. Band Fees: Remember that outstanding membership fees from the 2016-17 school year should be paid before summer break.  Seniors with outstanding fees will not be allowed to participate in commencement ceremonies.  Please let us know if you need a Charms Statement emailed to you.
  2. Class Placement: Class Placement auditions will take place this week Tuesday-Thursday. This decides whether you will be in Wind Ensemble, or Symphonic next year! If you need a copy of the etude, please see Ms. Palmer
  3. Method Books: All school owned method books must be returned this week to our band librarians.  Method books were given to both Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band. Students will be charged $10 for method books not returned or returned in poor condition.
  4. Cubbies: All cubbies should be completely cleaned out this week.  Any items left in the band room over the summer will be donated to GoodWill.  Please do not forget your stuff!
  5. School Owned Instruments: We will be collecting, cleaning and repairing all school owned instruments this week.  Students should return any and all school owned equipment.
  6. Summer & Fall Schedule:  Please double check your calendars with our summer camp and fall rehearsal schedule.  This information was emailed in January, and can be viewed on our blog at: http://shs-band.com
  1. ROOKIE CAMP: May 22-25
  2. MINI CAMP: July 17-21
  3. BAND CAMP: July 24-28
  4. POST-CAMP REHEARSALS: July 31, August 2-3

7. Afterschool Rehearsals 2017: This year, our afterschool rehearsal schedule has a slight change. Our Thursday rehearsal will now be a night rehearsal from 6-8 at the Southside High School stadium! This is such exciting news for “The PRIDE”! At these rehearsals, we will be able to practice on a field that we will perform on under the lights. We want to invite parents to attend rehearsals in the stadium, especially for the final Thursday night full run through of the show, which will happen around 7:40 each Thursday night. Giving the students a crowd will help reward them for all the hard work they are doing! Monday and Tuesday rehearsals will remain the same at our practice field from 3:15-5:30.

“The PRIDE” of Southside Attendance Policy
Because of the nature of our activity, and the number of members that we have to coordinate “The PRIDE” has a very strict attendance policy.  All members must be at all rehearsals and performances.  Members and potential members are expected and required to work their schedules accordingly. If any conflict arises, please let us know as soon as possible.

Tip for Enjoying Marching Band
Marching Band operates outside.  We live in Alabama.  Alabama is hot outside.  These are facts.  We cannot change them.
  • Drink plenty of WATER
  • Wear light color, loos fitting clothing
  • Prepare ahead of time for the heat
  • HAVE A GREAT ATTITUDE!  Everyone else will be hot and sweaty too

The PRIDE is an amazing group to be a part of and we guarantee that students will make memories here that will last them a lifetime.  However, if students are not prepared for the heat and other realities of being outside during the summer months they will not enjoy band.  We strongly urge everyone to spend some time outdoors before Rookie Camp to acclimate his or her body to the weather.  We want everyone to enjoy band and all of the opportunities that it brings.
