Dear Clarinetists and Educators, Clarinetists of all ages and abilities are invited to UAB for the 23rd Annual UAB Clarinet Symposium, March 1-2, 2025, two days filled with recitals, masterclasses, clarinet choir, and great vendors, including Backun Musical Services and Art's Music Shop. We have gathered some of the best performers and teachers from around the country; Backun Artist and Associate Professor of Clarinet at Oklahoma City University Lisa Kachouee, will be our special guest, along with prominent university professors and professional clarinetists from around the region! There will also be sessions available especially for middle school students, including a middle school clarinet choir, and a high school/adult clarinet choir, too and both groups will perform at the end of the festival. We will have an exhibit hall so that students can try clarinets and equipment from Backun Musical Services and Art’s Music, and they will also be able to purchase reeds, music, mouthpieces, and a lot of other clarinet-related items. A truly inspirational weekend for all! This year we are once again adding an educational component especially for band directors. Please join us for a session on Saturday, March 1st, at 2pm, in the UAB Band Room (Hulsey 210), on methods to help you dramatically improve your clarinet sections. Bring a clarinet if you can! Band Directors are welcome to attend the educational session and any of the weekend events free of charge. Just email me at [email protected] to register (free for teachers). Clarinetists can register by going to: https://www.uab.edu/cas/music/ and clicking on the eStore. The fee for the event is $40 and lunches on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday will be included for participants. If you have any questions, please email Kathleen Costello at [email protected] or call (205) 975-0558. I hope that you can join us for the Symposium! Best, Kathleen Costello Assistant Professor of Clarinet, UAB Principal Clarinet, Alabama Symphony Orchestra Founding Member, IonSound Project

"Greetings from UAB, and Happy New Year!
I hope that you all had a great holiday break! As you enter this MPA season, I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of our NEW UAB BRASS Symposium, which will be held on January 31st and February 1st, 2025 on the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus. This year's featured clinicians will be the UAB Faculty Brass Quintet (James Zingara and Steve Roberts, trumpets; James Baker, horn; Caleb Owenby, trombone; and Tom Yan, tuba). A highlight of the Symposium are the High School Honors Ensembles, which basically are “Honor Bands for Brass.” Students will get the opportunity to prepare pieces for performance in an all-like instrument environment, where you can learn techniques specific to your instrument along with improving your listening and ensemble skills. The honors ensembles are open to all motivated trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, and tuba players of high school and middle school age. The $60.00 registration fee covers 3.5 hours of instruction, 2 clinics, a Friday evening faculty recital, a medal and a UAB Brass Symposium T-Shirt.
