To All Members, Parents & Friends of The PRIDE,

Wow.  What an eventful two weeks we’ve already had!  I cannot say enough of just how proud I am of all our band students for their performance, integrity & behavior.  I wanted to take a minute to brag especially on our Wind Ensemble members for their extraordinary performance last week at the Alabama Music Educator’s Conference.

As many of you know, I was ill immediately following the performance so I apologize for not writing sooner.  I am back now though and am busy catching up.  The entire process of preparing the AMEA concert from day one of rehearsal, until the performance is something that I will never forget.  Every single member has worked incredibly hard since October.  Attending the number of extra rehearsals alone shows great commitment and dedication, and yet not once did a student complain to me.  They understood the tremendous honor of this invitation and worked to create a performance of which they should be very justifiably proud.  It is such a blessing for me as an educator to sit back and watch our students grow musically, but it is even more rewarding to see their blossoming maturity.  So many other music teachers contacted me to congratulate the kids on the concert.  They all agreed that the performance was stunning, but what blew them all away was the maturity, professionalism, and poise with which our students presented themselves.

Indeed, Emily Cagle, a Music Specialist at NBCT Bryan Elementary wrote to Mr. Winningham & Dr. Cosby to say: "I just wanted to take a minute to congratulate the Southside Band for their exemplary performance Thursday at the Alabama Music Educators Association Conference.  I expected their performance to be outstanding and they surpassed that expectation.  In addition to their performance, I was able to see their discipline and behavior before their performance.   I was impressed that as their director walked off stage before they performed not a single sound came from an instrument or a student.  They were SILENT.  In fact, Mr. Weaver had to step back on stage and let them know it was acceptable to play before the concert while he was off stage.  Each represented themselves, the band, your school system, & your community with incredible poise.  It was a privilege to experience their performance and witness their dedication and devotion to representing The PRIDE of Southside."

To say I am proud would be a gross understatement.  I want to thank every member of the program from the bottom of my heart.  Parents, you are to be commended as well.  Being a part of the band or any music program is not a commitment to be taken lightly and we are quite fortunate to have such a rich tradition of parental and community support here in Southside.  You have done a fine job or raising some truly remarkable young men & woman.

Congratulations on keeping and raising our long and proud tradition of musical excellence.  This performance will be a benchmark for future members of The PRIDE to live up to.  Job well done!

All my thanks, appreciation, and love,

Mr. Weaver

To All Wind Ensemble Members & Parents,

The time is finally here.  Our AMEA performance is exactly two weeks away!  Again, we cannot emphasize enough the importance of this performance.  Being selected to perform at the state convention is a tremendous honor that not many groups will ever receive.  We owe it to ourselves and to the bands that were not selected to give our best performance possible.  We are very proud of the hard work and dedication that you have already put into this concert. Keep it up!

Below is a list of important information and a tentative schedule for AMEA.  Please read everything and review it carefully and contact us if you have any questions.  Congratulations again on being selected to perform at the 2018 Alabama Music Educator’s In-Service Conference.

Go Panthers & Go PRIDE GO!

  1. Remaining Rehearsals: Coming off of a break, every single rehearsal that we have must be treated as sacred!  We cannot afford to have absences for any reason.  We know things will come up, but we ask that you please sacrifice when possible for the good of the entire group.  If these rehearsals were not absolutely necessary, we would not have them.  *Percussionists: you must make sure that every single part is covered in any circumstance.  A full calendar can be found online at http://www.shs-band.com/calendar.html
  2. Hotel Arrangements:  Because our performance is so early on the 18th, we will be traveling to Birmingham on Wednesday, the 17th to spend the night.  This will allow us to not be as rushed on the morning of the concert, although, we will still keep a tight schedule.  The hotel rate for each member is $45, which includes a full buffet breakfast.  We ask that all members have their hotel room paid for by Tuesday, the 16th at the latest.  Checks should be made payable to Southside High School.  More details below.

  6. Actual Performance:  The concert will begin at 10:15 am in the BJCC Concert Hall.  The performance is free and open to the public.  We HIGHLY encourage all parents and other family members to attend.  We ask as always, that audience members display proper concert etiquette by holding applause until the end, refrain from talking during the performance or using flash photography, and finally, please dress appropriately for a concert of this magnitude.

Important Information
  1. State Music Performance Assessment (MPA) & Rehearsal Schedule: State Assessment or MPA is the most important part of our band year.  Both the Symphonic Band & Wind Ensemble will prepare a concert of three works to be performed for a panel of state-appointed judges to critique.  In addition to the performance, both ensembles will be required to “sight-read” a piece of music for an additional judge that they have never seen before.  The Southside Band has a long and proud tradition of musical excellence and has earned superior ratings at State MPA for the past 30 consecutive years.  The importance of this event and the dedication that preparing it demands cannot be overstated.  To prepare, we will have a small number of after school sectionals & rehearsals.  A detailed schedule for both bands has been posted online and dates are listed on our calendar as well.  For the full MPA rehearsal schedule, please look online at http://www.shs-band.com/blog/state-mpa-rehearsal-schedule-2017-2018
  2. AMEA Performance:  In addition to their normal prep for MPA, the Wind Ensemble has been selected as one of only four bands in the state to perform at the 2018 Alabama Music Educators Association’s Professional Development Conference in Birmingham Thursday, January 18th.  This is a tremendous honor for our band program!  The Wind Ensemble will perform at 10:15 am on the 18th at the BJCC Concert Hall.  This performance is free, and open to the public.  Mr. Winningham has agreed to “principal’s excuse” any student who whishes to attend our concert (although they will be responsible for their own transportation).  Students who would like to attend the concert on excused absence should sign up with Mr. Weaver this week.
  3. Concert Attire:  Concert attire was ordered and distributed to students before our Christmas Concert.  If there are any issues with fit or missing items, please let Mrs. Hammock know immediately.  Prices for concert attire have now been made available to view via Charms.  We are asking that students and parents pay for their concert attire by May 1st.
  4. “Panther Prowl” 5K Run: The PRIDE Music Association is hosting a 5k Run Fundraiser on Saturday, February 24th.  If you can, please help us spread the word to secure more sponsors & participants.  There will be an information meeting next Thursday, Jan. 11th at 6 pm in the band room to make final preparations.  Your attendance is appreciated!  For more info & registration, please visit http://www.shs-band.com/blog/5k-panther-prowl-on-saturday-feb-24-2018
