Dear Clarinetists and Educators,
Clarinetists of all ages and abilities are invited to UAB for the 22nd Annual UABClarinet Symposium, March 2-3, 2024, two days filled with recitals, masterclasses, clarinet choir, and great vendors, including Backun Musical Services and Art's Music Shop. We have gathered some of the best performers and teachers from around the country; Backun Artist and creator of the highly successful ‘Clarinet Mentors’ online, Michelle Anderson, will be our special guest, along with Buffet Artist, President of the International Clarinet Association and Professor of Clarinet at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Diane Barger, Kathleen Costello (Principal Clarinetist of the Alabama Symphony), Brad Whitfield (Associate Principal of the Alabama Symphony), Lori Ardovino, (University of Montevallo), Robert Janssen (Alabama School of Fine Arts), Osiris Molina (University of Alabama), Kip Franklin (University of South Alabama), Brian Viliunas (Samford University), Kelsey Paquin(University of North Alabama), John Warren (Kennesaw State University), the Amicitia Duo, The Terra Winds Clarinet Choir, and many more professional clarinetists from around the region! There will also be sessions available especially for middle school students, including a middle school clarinet choir, and a high school/adult clarinet choir, too and both groups will perform at the end the festival. We will have an exhibit hall so that students can try clarinets and equipment from Backun Musical Services and Art’s Music, and they will also be able to purchase reeds, music, mouthpieces, and a lot of other clarinet-related items. A truly inspirational weekend for all! This year we are once again adding an educational component especially for band directors. Please join us for a session on Saturday, March 2nd, at 2pm, in the UAB Band Room (Hulsey 210), on methods to help you dramatically improve your clarinet sections. Bring a clarinet if you can! Band Directors are welcome to attend the educational session and any of the weekend events free of charge. Just email me at [email protected] to register (free for teachers). Clarinetists can register by going to: https://www.uab.edu/cas/music/ and clicking on the eStore. The fee for the event is $40 and lunches on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday will be included for participants. If you have any questions, please email Denise Gainey at [email protected] or call (205) 975-0558. Also, I wanted to share a sample of a series of videos that I’ve done for Backun Musical Services geared toward band directors teaching clarinet who are not clarinetists:
